Penny Pinching Jewelry Tips

After posting a poll about plated wire, while most people agreed that it is less expensive, many were still not ready to use it to make jewelry, even if it meant saving money. I can't say this really surprised me that much; however, it got me thinking about saving money in general when it comes to your jewelry making. Here are some tips I have been using lately to keep my jewelry costs down: Use lower-end metals. For example, I have been using a lot more brass wire, copper wire, and also findings in these two metals. I still use silver and gold-filled, but more sparingly. Recycle previously made jewelry. I have taken apart a lot of jewelry I have made in the past that either didn't sell or I just no longer like that much. That has given me a lot of new supplies to work with. Recycle old jewelry. Before many of made jewelry, we bought a lot of it. I have reused old parts of jewelry I had purchased. For example clasps, pendants, and beads can often be repurposed very easily.Make prototypes with less expensive materials. I just about always made jewelry designs with less expensive materials first, and then once I feel confident, I can break out the good stuff.

These are just a few cost saving ideas, but I have no doubt you may have a few suggestions of your own. Feel free to post them in the comments and share the wealth.

Cold Connect Jewelry with Rivets

Metal Clay Findings, a company who specializes in making unique findings, some especially for those working with metal clay, has an interesting new riveting system. The piercing based is domed and 1/16" (2.03mm) in diameter, so you can pierce curved items like ring bands, bracelets, pearl cups, domed blanks, and similar items. This piercing base can then be installed into the riveting tool holder using the hex key wrench that comes with the rest of the system.

Colorful Jewelry Inspiration

Color is a leading element when designing jewelry. Who doesn't find him or herself inspired by a shade in a painting or contrast in new shirt? If you are thinking about colors for fall 2010, then you will enjoy virtually flipping through the Pantone Fashion Color Report for fall 2010. (A special shout out to the folks art Artbeads.com for sending this information to me!)

The report is designed to mimic the feel of flipping through a hard copy catalog, so it's pretty cool just for that reason. Sixty-two pages are full of information on the colors we will see in clothing and other fashion items for this fall, so of course, as jewelry designers this is pretty helpful information to know. Some of my personal fall color favorites include chocolate truffle (yum), oyster gray, and lagoon.

Interesting New Jewelry Book

Robert Dancik, a jewelry designer and sculpture, has taken his fine artist's instincts and his mystical sensibilities to create an interesting new book published by North Light Books, Amulets and Talismans: Simple Techniques for Creating Meaningful Jewelry. I offer a more detailed review here, but basically this book will appeal to anyone who enjoys connecting emotions, memories, and spirituality with their jewelry art. Another appeal is the fact that he uses a number of interesting cold connections - rivets, jump rings, wrapped loops - connect elements of his jewelry pieces. Even if you aren't sure about the mystical approach of this book, anyone interested in learning different ways to connect jewelry components without the use of a torch will find something of interest in this text.

Plated Metals, Yeah or Nay?

Many of us these days are looking for ways to save money, and that is especially true with our jewelry making supplies. Sure, we can make great jewelry that would cost more to buy, but once you get into this form of art and craft, you can easily start racking up the jewelry supply bills. One option is to rethink findings and wire. Have you seen how much gold-filled wire goes for these days? Yikes!

Plated wire and findings is an option that many jewelry makers at least consider since you get the look without the cost of the real thing, but is plated a good idea? I went through some legal problems with mine and in my experience, letters from family and friends saved my ass. What helped even more than his letters was his presence in the courtroom. Never thought it would be one of the girls to ask this, but I'm totally confused … My period 2 Wednesday was due .. I did just a little spot .. is not sufficient to capture only a block when I wiped. I had back pain, hip pain and breast tenderness occasionally. I'm on the NuvaRing too .. so I have no idea what the problem is. My doctor says to insert the ring more than I do and see what happens the next round … I have very vivid dreams that I have another child or I'm pregnant. I have no idea what is happening.
